What is Food Rescue?

Food rescue is the practice of collecting edible, but surplus or unsold food, that would otherwise go to waste.
Instead, we collect and redistribute it where it is needed most.

We Rescue Food

Seven days a week, our drivers and volunteers rescue food, perfectly good surplus food from grocery stores, caterers, restaurants, etc. We then deliver it free of charge to over 100 partner agencies in Greenville County, including food pantries, soup kitchens, low income senior housing, homeless shelters, and many, many more.

We Help the Environment

When food decomposes in our local landfills, greenhouse gases are released into our air. Last year, we kept 2.7 million pounds of surplus food out of Greenville County landfills -- redirecting fresh, healthy food to our partners serving food insecure neighbors. We believe food belongs to people, not landfills.

We Create Community

Food brings us together and reminds us of the importance of human connection. Every day, we strive to deepen our connection with those we work alongside. In fact, “collaboration” is one of our core values. Our team members also proudly collaborate with the Greenville Food Security Coalition and Greater Good Greenville.

Loaves & Fishes Mission

Our mission is to rescue surplus food and redistribute it, free of charge, to our partner agencies,
in an effort to reduce food insecurity in Greenville County.

How We Help

Loaves & Fishes has been growing a local food rescue network to alleviate food insecurity since 1991.

We bridge the gap between excess food and the people and communities that need it. We partner with over 100 food producers, retailers, and restaurants to safely rescue their excess or unsold foods.

In 2024, we redistributed a record 2.5 million pounds to food pantries, churches, school and youth programs, community centers, mental health centers, emergency programs, shelters and soup kitchens—all at no cost to the agency—thanks to the support of our generous sponsors, donors and givers.

Making an Impact

“Thanks to Loaves & Fishes, we have healthy food to serve our students.”

Excess food from your home pantry, or surplus food from your business can be donated to Loaves & Fishes, and we will distribute it with our regularly scheduled rescue routes. Click on the apple to learn about our food donation guidelines. Or, consider hosting a food & fundraising drive at your place of worship, business, or neighborhood.

Volunteer

Loaves & Fishes rescue route volunteers are on the road seven days a week. You can sign up for routes as your schedule permits, or on a recurring basis. We also offer office and event volunteer opportunities, in addition to professional (unpaid) internships for students.

Committed to Transparency

85.8% of our total expenses go toward keeping our trucks on the road and food on the plates of those who need it most. Though administrative costs are a crucial part of fulfilling our mission, you can rest assured that we direct the lion’s share of your donation toward rescuing surplus food, redistributing it free of charge, and striving to ensure no good food goes to waste.
